2 Beaches to Reopen After Storm Repairs

State Parks and Recreation officials have scheduled reopening dates for two of three beaches in the Santa Monica Mountains District that remain closed from damage and erosion during January storms. La Jolla Beach in Ventura County is scheduled to reopen March 25. Workers there are restoring a quarter-mile stretch of eroded beach. El Matador State Beach in Los Angeles County is to reopen in mid-June. Driving rain cut gullies in the parking area and washed away sand along pillars that support a stairway from the parking lot to the beach. No reopening date has been established for the north beach campground of Leo Carrillo State Beach in Los Angeles County. Kenneth Leigh, chief ranger for the district, said the storm eroded portions of the beach and parking area and damaged fire pits and picnic tables.
