Georgia Tech shut down the nuclear reactor on its Atlanta campus and said it might never be restarted. John P. Crecine, Georgia Tech president, said that reactor operations not already halted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were being suspended, pending NRC approval of revised safety procedures. The agency stopped irradiation experiments at the 24-year-old reactor last summer, after a mishap resulted in contamination of the building. Crecine defended the firing last week of two physicists who had complained about reactor safety problems as part of an effort to “upgrade” the reactor staff.
