Khomeini Pardons 989

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Iran’s revolutionary patriarch, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, pardoned 989 prisoners to mark the ninth anniversary of the Islamic revolution’s rise to power, Tehran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported today. The agency said 194 prisoners have already been freed and the sentences on the others commuted to mark the Feb. 11 anniversary.
Also today, a car bomb exploded in a residential neighborhood of Tehran, wounding 10 people, damaging shops and shattering apartment building windows, the news agency reported. IRNA said the “bomb was planted by agents of the world arrogance” but gave no other details.
