Israeli President Chaim Herzog was elected to a second five-year term in the largely ceremonial post. In a parliamentary vote, the right-wing Likud Bloc joined members of the Labor Alignment to give Herzog 82 of the 102 votes cast. Labor and Likud share power in a coalition government forced upon them by inconclusive elections in 1984. Herzog, 69, beat the Likud candidate in the 1983 presidential ballot but has since won widespread support from conservatives, who agreed not to field a candidate against him this time.
