A large French conglomerate launched a bid to acquire the 42.9% of CertainTeed Corp. of Valley Forge, Pa., that it does not now own. CertainTeed shares jumped $13.50 to $45.125 on the New York Stock Exchange, well above the $41 offer by Compagnie de Saint-Gobain. CertainTeed is a leading manufacturer of fiberglass products and building materials. Saint-Gobain, which produces flat glass, insulation materials, industrial ceramics, pipe and machinery, first won controlling interest in CertainTeed in 1976.
