A Chinese movie director, fresh from winning an international film festival in Berlin last week, said Tuesday that stable politics would allow China to produce more award-winning pictures. Zhang Yimou, whose “Red Sorghum” won the Golden Bear award at the annual Berlin film festival, also told international media that he saw growing artistic freedom in his country. China has 16 film studios and turns out more than 140 feature pictures a year. . . . And, from the “Directors Guild of America’s worst nightmare” file: director Zhang earns the equivalent of $27 a month for his efforts.
