Chula Vista officials clamoring for construction of a “Harbor Island-like” peninsula in the South Bay received a strong boost Tuesday when the Board of Port Commissioners approved embarking on a preliminary engineering study and feasibility analysis.
Though construction of a man-made island is years away and its cost unknown, Tuesday’s approval was the first step in a long bureaucratic journey.
It is also too early for any exact configurations, but staff from the San Diego Unified Port District will be looking at various alternatives encompassing about 75 acres. These include an L-shaped island sticking out into the bay or a north-south extension similar to the one the Port District built in front of the downtown Marriott Hotel.
The island would be built near Chula Vista’s new 450-slip marina off J Street. No timetable was set for the completion of either report, according to Port District spokesman Dan Wilkens.
