POP LP CHART : Jackson’s ‘Bad’ Grand Slam

The new leader of the Billboard magazine pop singles chart is Michael Jackson’s benefit single, “Man in the Mirror”--the Buckled One’s royalties from it go to charity. It’s the fourth No. 1 pop single from Jackson’s “Bad” album--an all-time record. No other single artist has had four No. 1 singles from the same album. (The four No. 1 singles from 1977’s “Saturday Night Fever” sound track weren’t all by the same artist.) Kingdom Come, the hot new heavy-metal band, leaped 20 places to No. 31 in its second week on the chart. Billy Ocean’s fast-rising album, “Tear Down These Walls,” is No. 42 after two weeks. His single, “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car,” is No. 5 and looks to be headed for No. 1 on the pop chart.

* Robert Plant, the ex-Zeppelin lead singer, is one of the rare exceptions to the rule that former members of superstar bands can’t have successful solo careers. His “Now and Zen” album has zoomed up to No. 16 on the pop chart in just three weeks.
