**** “The Apartment.” MGM-UA: $19.95.
C.C. Baxter is a rising young executive with an ingenious ploy: He lends out his apartment to his bosses for their off-hours dalliance. But C.C. is about to learn that you can’t get a key to the executive washroom without dirtying your hands. A great romantic comedy from the master of romantic cynicism, Billy Wilder, who sets three charming actors--Jack Lemmon as Baxter, Shirley MacLaine as adorable elevator girl Fran Kubelik, and Fred MacMurray as Baxter’s rotten boss--in a scathing, ingeniously funny 1960 portrayal of corporate corruption and backstairs sex. Co-written by I.A.L. Diamond, it’s one of the rare multiple Oscar-winners that may have actually deserved them.
