Local News in Brief : Holmes Report Cites AIDS

Pornographic film star John Holmes died of complications of AIDS, according to his death certificate, which was filed Thursday.
The certificate said the 43-year-old actor died early Sunday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sepulveda of encephalitis--a swelling of the brain--as a consequence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Holmes’ body was cremated Tuesday.
The VA hospital, where Holmes was admitted in November, had refused to release the cause of death.
The death certificate, filed in the North Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, said Holmes also suffered from a swelling of the lymph nodes and an esophageal infection, both common symptoms of AIDS.
Shaken by earlier unconfirmed reports that Holmes, who once boasted of having had sex with 14,000 women, had died of AIDS, a group of adult film industry actors has organized a testing program. The tests will be conducted April 5 at the Awareness Testing Center in Van Nuys, paid for by the Los Angeles-based Adult Video Assn., group officials said.
