UC Transfers

Neither your editorial “Keeping the Faith at UC” (Feb. 22) nor the letters (March 5) mention an obvious discrepancy in the admissions policies of the UC system. While hundreds of straight-A applicants to the freshman class are being turned away, the UC system admits transfer students from the community colleges and the Cal State system who need only be C students.
It seems that one way the UC system could reduce the problem of denying fully qualified freshman applicants a place in the system is by requiring that transfer students meet standards similar to those required for the freshman applicants. The extra spaces created by stricter transfer policies could then be used to admit freshman applicants whose academic records are stronger than those admitted under the current transfer policies.
