The National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics has toughened academic requirements for student athletes by requiring a 2.0 grade-point average and proof of degree work.
Athletes must meet two of three requirements in order to play as freshmen: a score of 15 on the ACT test or 700 on the SAT test; an overall high school grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; and graduate in the top 50% of his or her high school graduating class.
The requirements go into effect in the fall of 1989.
