Social Security Direct Deposit

As a Social Security recipient I sympathize with the people whose checks were stolen recently. However, if they had direct deposit to a bank instead of having their check mailed this would not happen.
I cannot understand why people do not take advantage of this service that Social Security gives. I have had direct mail deposits ever since I started receiving Social Security payments five years ago, and I have never had any problems.
