Director Martin Ritt’s plans to film “Union Street” in Massachusetts with Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro remains a controversial issue in Massachusetts, where some veterans have protested because of Fonda’s anti-war activities during the Vietnam War. But, in a recent town meeting in Chicopee, Mass., Fonda supporters made themselves heard. Medal of Honor recipient Charles Liteky: “I’m very grateful for those who protested against the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. . . . Had they not done that . . . we would have had more people die.” Meantime, former House Speaker and longtime Massachusetts Rep. Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill issued a statement praising Fonda for her efforts to end the war in Southeast Asia.
