SOLANA BEACH — Albert Collins, the Texas singer-guitarist whose cool treble guitar style earned him the nickname “Iceman,” will perform tonight at the Belly Up Tavern.
The son of sharecroppers, Collins grew up in rural Texas and was taught to play guitar by his famous cousin, Sam (Lightnin’) Hopkins. In 1948, he began plying the Houston blues-club circuit with his famous cousin’s equally famous friend, Clarence (Gatemouth) Brown.
Collins’ 1979 album, “Ice Pickin,” was nominated for a Grammy Award and named “best blues album of the year” by several American and European music magazines.
