Veteran catcher Rich Gedman of the Boston Red Sox had his right foot placed in a cast, a procedure that will keep him out of action for about a month while a fracture near the toe heals.
Dr. Arthur Pappas, an orthopedic specialist and team physician, said Gedman suffered the injury when hit by his own foul ball Sunday in Texas.
Former Temple University All-American and U.S. Olympian John Marzano will replace Gedman as Boston’s starting catcher.
