‘Bill Viola Videos’
U.S.A., 1979-83, 80 minutes, 8 p.m. Warner Building, AFI, 2021 N. Western Ave., Hollywood These works--the tricky, fugal “Ancient of Days,” the edgy, metronomic “Anthem,” and the rapt and contemplative “Hatsu-Yume”--are, in a way, video painting. Viola’s wordless, starkly beautiful images and super-realistic stereo sound tracks recall the effects of minimalist New Age jazz; they play better as background than absorbing spectacle. Recommended for devotees of the experimental.
