Roundup : Marina Beats Ocean View to Reach Softball Playoffs

Marina High School scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat Ocean View, 6-1, and win a third-place playoff softball game at Golden West College Friday.
Marina (12-11) advances to the Southern Section 4-A playoffs as the Sunset League’s No. 3 representative. Ocean View finishes its season
Ocean View’s Marla Pickard (4-2) had allowed one hit going into the seventh, but Marina took advantage of 5 hits, 2 walks, an error and a wild pitch. Willa Parchen (5-7) pitched the final two innings for Marina to earn the victory.
In the 3-A track and field preliminaries:
Jim Geerlings of Newport Harbor had the fastest time in three heats of the boys’ 1,600 meters at Arcadia High. Geerlings ran 4 minutes 17.27 seconds to win Heat No. 3 over David Scudamore of Palos Verdes. Corona del Mar’s Jim Robbins won heat No. 1 in 4:20.42.
Robbins also won his heat in the 800 with a time of 1:55.79.
Jon Cisneros of Los Alamitos had the best mark in long jump qualifying with a leap of 22 feet 2 1/2 inches.
In the girls’ competition, d’Layne Kerr of Corona del Mar won her heats in the 200 (24.9) and the 400 (57.82).
The Southern Section Divisional finals are scheduled for 11 a.m. next Saturday at Cerritos College.
