JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Baton-wielding riot police today arrested 245 black employees of a luxury hotel as they demonstrated against a U.S. company that is canceling its contract to manage the hotel.
Westin Hotels Co. of Seattle had managed the Carleton Hotel for 15 years. It reportedly decided to pull out of South Africa because of pressure from the anti-apartheid movement. Hotel guests, including a contingent of travel agents from North America and Europe, looked on in amazement as police ordered the chanting protesters to disperse, then moved in with batons to begin the arrests.
