Atransient suspected of committing six bank robberies in the South Bay was in custody Saturday after police apprehended him at an impound lot in Pacoima.
John Chaffee, 37, was being held in jail at the Hawthorne Police Department on $61,000 bail. He was arrested Friday by a team of investigators representing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and police departments in Hawthorne, El Segundo and Gardena.
Deputy Sheriff Van Mosley said that Chaffee matched the description of the bandit who committed six bank robberies in the South Bay area between March 25 and April 14.
Chaffee was arrested in Pacoima as he tried to retrieve his car from an impound lot, where it was held because of a recent arrest on an unrelated charge, Mosley said.
The FBI is investigating the robberies, and no details were available, authorities said.
