Keeping Class in Classical Music Station

I hope that the program directors of our two fine classical music radio stations, KUSC and KFAC, do not get any goofy ideas while reading your article about Detroit’s WQRS-FM and its pathetic attempts to pick up yupscale former rockers as listeners by playing LITE-KLASSIX and clowning around between tunes.

This aging punk rocker is a subscriber to KUSC for the simple reason that it is a serious music station with knowledgeable on-air personnel. I do not desire to be pandered to by some bozo playing baroque versions of “All You Need Is Love” or enthralling me with “short pieces” in “mostly major keys.”

This sounds like the marketing concept of someone who was set afire by the revolutionary thinking embraced in creation of that paragon of renegade yuppie radio, the Wave. Well, I guess we’ve seen that while yuppies may be dumb enough to dig themselves into the negative amortization morass, they are still not so stupid that they will sit and be bored and insulted by music programmed by half-baked market research instead of love of music.

I ain’t no stinking elitist. But here’s to the relatively high standards of L.A. classical radio. Let’s hope they are here to stay.
