If North is ever brought to trial, the proceedings should be conducted in juvenile court. North’s principal “crime” is that he lacks the judgment and maturity to deal responsibly with the kinds of dunderheads who cooked up the arms-for-hostages deal with Iran. The good colonel compounded this high-placed stupidity by acting out a bizarre, dual-character role that combined the worst features of Gen. Custer and Inspector Clouseau.
We have wasted far too much judicial time and money on this comedy. An effective and lasting remedy for future Iran-Contra debacles would be a set of standards that prohibit juveniles from entry into the ruling circles of this nation.
