College Roundup : Kirsch’s Second-Half Goal Gives UC Irvine 2-1 Nonconference Victory Over San Diego

Erik Kirsch broke a 1-1 tie with a goal midway through the second half to give the UC Irvine men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference match Sunday at Irvine.
Kirsch scored off a corner kick by Darren Bedolla with 23 minutes left in the second half. Goalie Dammon Ellis, who had five saves, held of San Diego to preserve the win.
San Diego (0-1) took a 1-0 lead 19 minutes into the game on a goal by Chris Dule. Irvine (1-0) tied the score less than two minutes later on a goal by Jeff Pene.
Doug Wedge made three saves for San Diego.
In the Cal State Fullerton tournament, the Titans played to a 0-0 tie against St. Mary’s in the final game of the two-day event. Goalie Jay Nettekoven made 14 saves for Fullerton (0-1-1). Michael Reis had 14 saves for St. Mary’s (1-1-1).
The tie gave Cal State Los Angeles the tournament championship. Los Angeles defeated Texas Christian, 1-0, on a goal by Brent Bish.
Los Angeles is 2-0, TCU is 0-3.
In women’s soccer, UC Santa Barbara defeated Irvine, 3-0, in a nonconference match at Irvine.
Lisa Telk, Laurie Hill and Tricia Kimbell scored goals for Santa Barbara (1-0).
Janice Taft made 27 saves for Irvine (0-2). Jan Urich had five saves for Santa Barbara.
