Golf Roundup : Green Leads Canadian Open in Rain-Delayed Round

Ken Green held a three-stroke lead with seven holes to play Sunday when a thunderstorm forced an overnight suspension of the final round of the Canadian Open golf tournament at Oakville, Ontario.

The 22 players stranded on the rain-soaked Glen Abbey Golf Club course marked their positions and were due to return this morning to complete the tournament.

Green, who held a two-shot lead after three rounds, was 15 strokes under par for the tournament through 11 holes of the final round. He was 2-under par for the day.

Larry Rinker, who had consecutive 65s in the second and third rounds, was alone in second when play was held up. He was 12-under par with six holes to play.

Dave Barr birdied the last three holes for a 66 shortly before the rains came. His closing burst secured his position as the low Canadian at 277, 11-under par.

Mark Wiebe was next among the 49 men who completed play at 278, 10-under par. Wiebe had a 67.

Scott Verplank and Australian Wayne Grady also were 10-under par and playing the back nine. Verplank had seven holes to go, Grady three.

Those appeared to be the only players in contention for the $135,000 first prize. No one else on the course was within six shots of the leader.

Jack Nicklaus, who designed the course as a permanent site for the Canadian Open, had a 67 and finished at 285, 3-under par.

Green, two in front of Jay Delsing when the day’s play started, dropped back into a tie with a first-hole bogey and Delsing’s second-hole birdie.

Green, however, regained control by hitting short-iron approaches inside of six feet on the fourth, fifth and eighth holes and birdied them all.

Chris Moody of England shot a 7-under-par 65 on the final round to win the $677,000 European Masters golf tournament by one stroke at Crans, Switzerland.

Moody, who started the day three strokes back, finished at 268, 20-under par on the alpine course. He earned $187,000.

Seve Ballesteros of Spain finished in a three-way tie for second at 269 with Ian Woosnam of Wales and Anders Forsbrand of Sweden.

Betsy King shot a 4-under par 68 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the $250,000 LPGA Rail tournament at Springfield, Ill.

King had a two-day total of 136, 8-under par, going into today’s final round of the 54-hole tournament at the Rail Golf Club.

Margaret Ward also shot a 68 and was tied for second at 138 with Susan Sanders and Nancy Brown.
