Marat Gramov, chairman of the Soviet Olympic Committee, said his country’s Olympic gold medal winners will receive the equivalent of a $19,047 bonus.
Gramov said athletes would get $7,936 for a silver medal and $4,761 for a bronze.
“The Olympic charter says athletes should not suffer as a result of preparations for the Olympics,” he said. “We think this financial arrangement is the best way to compensate an athlete for his effort over a number of years.”
