Defense of Judge

I recently read your story on the retirement of Judge Jack Levitt from the San Diego Superior Court (“Levitt Leaving S.D. Bench to Mixed Reviews,” Aug. 24). In what I viewed as an unfortunately incomplete article, the author apparently was most concerned about finding the disgruntled and dissatisfied to opine on Judge Levitt’s career.
From my perspective working with the judiciary throughout the state, Judge Levitt has had a distinguished career marked by numerous outstanding contributions to administration of justice. Most recently, he served as chair of the Judicial Council’s Court Management Committee overseeing trial-court delay programs throughout the state. He has been an active participant in the training of judges for many years.
The San Diego Superior Court has distinguished itself as one of the most innovative and cooperative benches in our state. Constantly seeking to find ways to improve the administration of justice, Judge Levitt has been instrumental in that court’s efforts.
Yes, Judge Levitt will be missed by all of us who appreciate a truly devoted public servant committed to a standard of excellence in courts.
