The United States condemned the military government of Haiti for failing to take action against armed attacks on church worshipers and opposition figures. At least five people were killed and 60 wounded Sunday when two dozen men burst into the church of a militant Roman Catholic priest, Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and shot or stabbed terrified parishioners. Aristide, an outspoken critic of Haiti’s military rulers, escaped unhurt and went into hiding. “This raises questions about the regime’s commitment to the human rights of the Haitian people,” State Department spokesman Charles Redman said.
