Camarillo 9, Rio Mesa 7--Ernest Rittenhouse booted field goals of 27, 42 and 20 yards, the latter the game-winner with 4:45 remaining, to lead the Scorpions at Rio Mesa.
Rio Mesa had a chance to win the game with 49 seconds remaining, but Matt Zarit’s 39-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide to the left.
Rio Mesa played without starting fullback Geoff Freedman, who tore a muscle in his calf during practice earlier in the week and may be lost for the season, Coach John Reardon said. Freedman rushed for 36 yards and 2 touchdowns in last week’s win over Channel Islands.
Sophomore running back Kris Kirksey paced Camarillo with a game-high 62 yards rushing in 13 attempts and caught 5 passes for 57 yards.
