The City Council approved a Police Department request for $69,524 in additional funds to cover the costs of complying with a recent state court decision on jail procedures.
The decision, Youngblood vs. Gates, requires all local jails to provide inmates with English and Spanish daily newspapers, board games and 24-hour, 7-day-a-week visitation rights.
Also, the length of time allowed for police investigation of crimes, including interviewing of arrestees and filing with the district attorney’s office, has been cut from two working days to one.
