A 33-year-old Santa Ana man died early Sunday of injuries suffered the day before when the car in which he was a passenger smashed head-on into a tree, police said.
Antonio Perez Gallardo was declared dead at 12:35 a.m. at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Collie Provence said.
The driver of the car, Maria Rodriguez, 38, suffered moderate injuries and was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving, Provence said. She was taken to the UCI jail ward. Bail was set at $10,000.
Shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, Rodriguez crashed into a tree in the 1700 block of West Myrtle Avenue, Provence said. Rodriguez told police she had swerved moments before to miss striking another car, then lost control of her own vehicle.
Gallardo, a passenger in the car, suffered major head injuries, Provence said.
