Du Pont Co.’s third-quarter profit rose 2%...

Du Pont Co.’s third-quarter profit rose 2% from a year ago to $461 million. Sales were up 5% to $8 billion. The Wilmington, Del., chemicals and energy company attributed its performance to strong worldwide demand and improved downstream petroleum margins. The firm, which owns the oil exploration and refining company Conoco Inc., also said earnings were constrained by lower crude oil prices and by higher costs.
