Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics is suffering from a recurrence of tendinitis in his Achilles’ tendons and surgery is a possibility, team officials said.
“We don’t want to do anything unnecessary, but there won’t be any procrastination,” General Manager Jan Volk said. “We don’t want to wait until February or March to make a decision.”
Bird said: “I had the same problem two years ago, so I’m not really concerned now. I want to play, and it’s early in the season.”
Dr. Arnie Scheller, the Celtics’ physician, said Bird aggravated the condition in games on consecutive nights against the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers Friday and Saturday.
