Separate groups of up to 100 protesters in Seoul demanded the arrest of former South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan on corruption charges and clashed with police firing tear gas. No arrests or injuries were reported in the scattered protests, which failed to attract wide public support. Prime Minister Lee Hyun Jae issued a statement asking people to refrain from violence, citing continuing government investigations into alleged corruption during Chun’s seven-year term, which ended in February. Chun, who seized power with military backing in 1980, is under severe criticism for his alleged involvement in major financial scandals and human rights violations.
