Discovery Astronauts Cheered in Native Iowa

CLINTON, Iowa — Two astronauts who flew on the recent space shuttle Discovery flight returned to their home state Friday to the cheers of hundreds of flag-waving parents and children.
A high school band struck up the national anthem while George D. (Pinky) Nelson and David C. Hilmers stood at attention on a flatbed truck bearing a sign, “Welcome Heroes. The Pride of Clinton County.” Nelson was born in Charles City and Hilmers was born in Clinton but reared in DeWitt.
