El Salvador’s armed forces chief rejected a cease-fire called by leftist guerrillas, calling it a propaganda ploy aimed at Western Hemisphere diplomats gathered for a meeting of the Organization of American States that begins Monday. “The armed forces have a constitutional mission to carry out, which is to combat subversion. I have not received any such orders to suspend operations,” Col. Emilio Ponce said. The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front rebels, who have been fighting the U.S.-backed government for nine years, said Friday that they would halt all but defensive operations while the OAS diplomats from 31 nations are in San Salvador.
