WASHINGTON — The Justice Department announced Friday that it had filed suit against the State of New Jersey, alleging discrimination in the hiring of blacks, Latinos and women for its police forces.
The suit charged that New Jersey’s written and physical examinations used to select candidates for entry-level police jobs, with the state and in 250 New Jersey cities, kept out those groups.
It seeks an end to the discrimination and retroactive seniority with back pay for anyone harmed by the alleged discrimination.
