Trying to stop Capistrano Valley High School senior center Holly Anderson has been a difficult task for opposing teams this season. Just ask El Toro Coach Greg Yeck.
Anderson scored a game-high 31 points, including 2 free throws with 14 seconds to play, to help Capistrano Valley rally for a 61-58 victory over El Toro in a South Coast League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Capistrano Valley.
“Our game plan was to stop Holly and (Shelly) Zierhut,” Yeck said. “We just were not able to contain them and that was a big difference.”
Anderson was nearly unstoppable. She scored 16 points in the first half and added 15 in the second, mostly from down low on the baseline. Zierhut added 10 points and Lainie Spence had 14 for the Cougars.
Capistrano Valley’s record improves to 13-5 overall, 1-2 in league play. El Toro dropped to 11-7, 2-1.
El Toro led most of the game, but the Chargers found themselves in trouble when their leading scorer, senior forward Kristen Bevis, was benched after picking up her fourth foul early in the fourth period.
Capistrano Valley, trailing, 50-43, entering the fourth period, outscored El Toro 18-8 in the final period for the victory.
Mission Viejo 56, Irvine 12--Tina Ranker scored 16 points and had 12 assists to lead visiting Mission Viejo (15-3, 2-0).
