John Unterecker; Poet,Biographer of Hart Crane

John Unterecker, 66, a poet and biographer who was nominated for the National Book Award in 1970 for “Voyager: A Life of Hart Crane.” He also wrote “A Reader’s Guide to W. B. Yeats,” a definitive text on the life of the poet. Unterecker’s poetry had appeared in such magazines as The New Yorker, Nation, and Poetry. Unterecker was named to the Citizen’s Chair in English literature at the University of Hawaii in 1969 after heading the graduate division of English at Columbia University in New York. In Honolulu on Tuesday of complications following heart surgery.
