The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia extended an olive branch to rival Amal militia members, calling for an immediate cease-fire after 16 days of fierce fighting for control of Lebanon’s 1 million Shiite Muslims. Hezbollah proposed a six-point peace plan; there was no response from Amal. The peace offer was made public as the rival Shiite militias clashed twice in Beirut’s southern slums and as the Red Cross removed 20 bodies from a southern Lebanon battlefront after arranging a “mercy cease-fire.”
