Nation : New Administration May Increase Quotas for Refugees, Baker Says

WASHINGTON — The new Bush Administration may raise quotas for refugees in light of the rising numbers of people wanting to come to the United States from such places as the Soviet Union and Southeast Asia, Secretary of State-designate James A. Baker III said today.
“We will have to look at the possibility of increasing numbers and of increasing dollars” for the refugee program, Baker said at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
