Rival Reportedly to Back Ron Brown

WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Michael D. Barnes of Maryland is dropping out of the race for chairmanship of the Democratic Party, political sources said Monday.
Barnes reportedly planned to endorse the candidacy of Ron Brown, a Washington attorney who was convention manager for the Rev. Jesse Jackson in his quest for the presidential nomination.
Barnes’ departure would leave four contenders for the post, now held by Paul G. Kirk Jr., who did not seek a second four-year term.
The other candidates are former Reps. James Stanton of Ohio and James R. Jones of Oklahoma and Michigan party Chairman Richard Wiener.
