Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Police Approve Pact, Ending Labor Dispute

Police officers overwhelmingly voted to approve a 2-year contract, bringing to an end a labor dispute that began in the spring of 1987.
Members of the Santa Ana Police Benevolent Assn. voted 320 to 31 to accept the contract negotiated by city and union representatives last month, said Sgt. Donald Blankenship, president of the association.
The contract boosts police officers’ salaries by 5%, retroactive to July 1, 1988. Sergeants will receive a 7% increase. Officers will receive an additional 3.5% increase retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year, and another 3.5% raise on July 1.
The contract’s provisions also call for the city to increase its contributions to the officers’ health insurance programs.
