Santa Clara High Placed on Year’s Probation

The Santa Clara High School boys’ basketball program has been placed on probation for one year by the Southern Section’s Executive Committee because the team withdrew from the Coast Christmas tournament last December at Estancia High School. Santa Clara will not be allowed to participate in any regular-season tournaments in the 1989-90 season.
The committee also ordered the school to compensate Estancia for losses in gate and concession receipts and to reimburse Laguna Hills and Huntington Beach for travel expenses.
The action was announced after a hearing in which Lou Cvijanovich, Santa Clara’s basketball coach, was ordered to explain why his team withdrew from the tournament after a 39-38 loss to Edison.
Santa Clara (20-3) begins play as the top-seeded team in the 2-A division tonight against St. Bonaventure at Ventura College.
