Dutch Seize Cargo of Frozen Apes

AMSTERDAM — Dutch customs seized a grisly haul of frozen apes and the meat of antelopes, monkeys, squirrels, and aardvarks hidden on a Zairean ship bound for Antwerp, a customs department spokeswoman said Friday.
Jose van de Wouw said the frozen ape carcases and about about 50 pounds of meat were found on the freighter Bukavu in Amsterdam during a routine customs inspection.
“We believe this was all destined for expensive restaurants in Brussels and Antwerp where it seems it is a great delicacy, “ Van de Wouw said.
Trade in ape meat and many other types of exotic African animals is prohibitted under international agreement.
