Scott Hargrove scored a goal in the 76th minute to lead Valhalla to a 1-0 semifinal victory over University City on Tuesday in a San Diego Section 2-A boys’ soccer playoff game at Grossmont High School.
Valhalla will play San Diego for the championship Friday at Torrey Pines High School.
Valhalla (24-0-0) outshot University City (16-4-3), 16-2.
“If it was a boxing match, we would have won 13 rounds to two,” Valhalla Coach George Logan said.
Valhalla has shut out its opponents in 18 of 24 games this season.
The Norsemen were without starting midfielder Mark Dirkes, who was out with the flu.
“I thought that just might give University City the edge they needed, but (freshman) Roland Weisheit did a super job,” Logan said.
In the other boys’ 2-A semifinal:
San Diego 2, San Marcos 1--San Diego (18-1-2) scored two first-half goals to defeat San Marcos (15-5-3) at Grossmont High School. The Cavers advanced to their first San Diego Section title game.
Girls
2-A semifinals
Ramona 2, Valhalla 1--Joanne Hamilton had a goal and an assist and Carrie Bell added another goal for Ramona (23-2-1). Terry Veisel scored in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for Valhalla (19-5-2). Ramona scored first and never trailed. “Our girls had to go out and get them early, and it’s hard to come back after getting behind,” Valhalla Coach David Macky said. Ramona will play San Pasqual in the 2-A girls’ championship.
