Roundup : Stevens Scores 31 to Lead Stanford

Trisha Stevens scored 31 points and, along with Katy Stedings, led a 15-2 surge early in the second half as the No. 4-ranked Stanford women defeated No. 8 Iowa, 98-74, Thursday night at Ruston, La., in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Midwest Regional.

The Cardinal (28-2), winner of 22 straight, will play No. 3 Louisiana Tech, the defending national champion, in Saturday night’s Regional championship game. Louisiana Tech advanced with an 85-68 victory over Louisiana State. Tech’s Venus Lacy had 27 points and 15 rebounds.

Stanford led, 40-34, at halftime, but it was 55-36 with 14:52 left in the game.

Shanda Berry had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Iowa, which finished the season with a 27-5 record.

Texas 88, Nevada Las Vegas 77--Clarissa Davis scored 25 points, and Vicki Hall hit five straight three-pointers as the Longhorns defeated the Rebels at Austin, Tex., in the semifinals of the West Regional.

Texas (27-4) will play Maryland, an 89-54 winner over Stephen F. Austin, for the Regional championship Saturday.

Vicki Lander, averaging only eight points a game, scored 20 for No. 16 Las Vegas, which finished 27-8.

Dana Tate had 30 points and seven steals to lead Maryland.

Auburn 71, Clemson 60--Carolyn Jones scored 17 points, and Linda Godby came off the bench to add 13 as Auburn won at home in the semifinals of the Mideast Regional.

Auburn (30-1) advanced to Saturday’s Regional final against Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi, which defeated North Carolina State, 68-63.

It will be the fifth time two SEC teams have meet in the Mideast final.

Clemson (20-11) was led by Becky Holloway, who scored a game-high 18 points.
