JERUSALEM — A lawyer for convicted Nazi war criminal John J. Demjanjuk requested a retrial Tuesday because of new evidence he claims will prove his client was not at the World War II Treblinka death camp, state-run Israel Radio reported.
Demjanjuk, a retired Cleveland, Ohio, auto worker, was convicted April 13, 1988, of being the Nazi guard “Ivan the Terrible” and sentenced to death. His appeal, already postponed several times, is scheduled to begin in November.
