Former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs meets Mike Evans in a 10-round fight tonight at the Strand in Redondo Beach.
This is the first fight for Tubbs (25-2) since being knocked out in two rounds by Mike Tyson last March in Tokyo. Tubbs, 30, is ranked seventh by the World Boxing Council, while Evans (17-2) is 15th.
Tubbs, 225 pounds, won the title from Greg Page on a 15-round unanimous decision on April 29, 1985, but lost a majority decision to Tim Witherspoon in his next bout nine months later. Evans is expected to fight at 250.
The five-bout card, beginning at 7:30 p.m., includes three fights with South Bay boxers. Carson junior welterweight Hedgmon Robertson (25-4) will face Steve Lewis (14-5), Redondo Beach super middleweight Troy Emerson (6-2) opposes Tom Lillard in a four-round bout and Redondo Beach heavyweight Jimmy Ellis, a former football standout at Redondo High, faces Darren Etheridge. The other bout matches heavyweights Troy Baudoin and Tim Mixon in their pro debuts.
