Japan’s Merchandise Trade Surplus Rises: The 7.7% April increase over a year ago to $7.3 billion renewed an upward trend broken in March after six straight monthly rises. The Finance Ministry, releasing its preliminary trade figures for last month, said the surplus with the United States rose 10.4% from a year ago to $4.56 billion.
