Bonnie Ebenkamp pitched a one-hitter and Diamond Bar High School scored four runs in the ninth inning to defeat Canyon, 4-0, in the second-round of the Southern Section 4-A softball playoffs Wednesday at Canyon.
Diamond Bar (23-2) was limited to three hits through eight innings by Canyon’s Sara Roberts (10-3). Then in the ninth,Pam Barr lead off with a single to left. Barr beat Roberts’ throw to second after Julie Hensel’s bunt. Barr then beat Comanche third baseman Krissy Kyriazis to the bag on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.
Canyon Coach Lance Eddy then replaced Roberts with Kristin Heizer, who walked Theresa Zalweski to force home a run. Laura Kreps and Mindi Bloomenstein followed with one-run singles, and the fourth run came on second baseman Dalynne Large’s throwing error.
Canyon (20-12), which got its only hit in the second inning on Maureen Del Mazzio’s bunt single, got runners as far as second base three times in the game before Ebenkamp (12-1) shut down the Comanche threats.
Ebenkamp, who struck out 12, walked only one. Three Comanches reached base on errors.
Diamond Bar, the 4-A’s second-seeded team, will play Garden Grove, which defeated Crescenta Valley 2-1 Wednesday, in Friday’s quarterfinals.
